Musei Civico e Diocesano one of the most important medieval art museums in the province with works from Sienese artists such as Simone Martini and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Giovanni di Paolo, Sano di Pietro and Il Vecchietta. Top picks from its interesting anthology of works from the Middle Ages to the 16th century are the noteworthy collection of 14th-century wooden sculptures, a 12th-century painted cross taken from Sant’Antimo, a glazed della Robbia terracotta and an early Renaissance Madonna with Child and Saints by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. Though not quite competing with the views from the Rocca (which stretch south to Monte Amiata and north over the town as far as Siena), there are other beautiful views from Piazza del Duomo (the square’s main attraction, the Duomo, is a disappointing reconstruction from the 1820s) and from Porta al Corniolo. Pop into the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso on your way down to the latter; it has some exquisite Baroque altarpieces behind its modern façade.
